Publishers Occupy Both Negotiating Tables
· New York time
Publishers are negotiating with platforms in both AI content and book listening. Reach CEO Piers North wants its Google AI content deal to become a framework for further language-model agreements, Digiday reports. Separately, The Wall Street Journal reports YouTube discussions with publishers about a 2027 audiobook library, according to Tubefilter; YouTube has not confirmed that report. The audiobook offering could be tied to Premium. The two markets give published work different destinations, while keeping agreements central to how platforms expand their offerings. For publishers, a reusable negotiating framework and a prospective listening outlet represent different commercial opportunities. Digital distribution may move at extraordinary speed, but it keeps arriving at a familiar office where somebody asks whether the paperwork has been signed and who has the latest version.
